Many people believe Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico's Independence Day. But they are wrong! Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16 which is Mexico’s most important national holiday. So what is Cinco de Mayo? A holiday that recognizes the victory of the Mexican army over the French army on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States the Fifth of May has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage.
